450SE (W116.032 M117.983) instrument cluster removal - how hard do I push?
Hi All. I am trying to remove the instrument cluster on my 1973 450SE (W116.032 M117.983). I have read some older posts that explain quite clearly that I remove the molding under the steering wheel, get my hand up under the dash and push the cluster out from behind. I tried this last night, but the cluster feels really solid - it wouldn't budge at all. How hard do I push? Anything else I should be doing?
Thanks in advance, Joe |
If it's the same as the W123 you will have to pull the speedo cable in from the firewall some to give it enough slack to enable to cluster to move. Also possibly the oil pressure line which is a direct feed up to the gauge.

got the cluster out!
Hi Peter,
Thanks for your advice. I *finally* managed to get the cluster out this morning! It was really bound in tightly, but I kept gently working away, and finally got it free. Joe |
Great.
Yeah those rubber shims in the corners just don't want to let go after they have gotten nice and comfortable there. |
