1994 S500 for $3699. on ebay.
Saw this car for sale by the same owner who has a S600 Coupe.
It brings an interesting point on these troublesome W140 era cars, as to run them with the sensors and small stuff broken and only fix the major things for safety purposes. The but-it-now price of $3699. makes it very tempting. But I remember the saying, The most expensive MB, is a cheap MB. What do you guys think on buying this car, and other S class MBs., with this thinking? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220145981133&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RCRX_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT&refitem=220146144277&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=active_view_item&usedrule1=CrossSell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget

With over 200k I think the engine will need major servicing..at the very least an upper-end overhaul. Expensive...probably $5k-6k. Then there are the other issues which will add several more thousands of dollars.
Personally, I would opt for a lower mileage car with less issues. You can either pay now for a nicer specimen or really pay later buying a high-mileage vehicle. It's MUCH cheaper to buy a car that was meticulously maintained with everything done by someone else who's eager to sell than it is to make a less than perfect car right. As an alternative I would opt for a w126 which is very DIY friendly. I heard the 140 is a great car provided it was serviced properly. But it will eat you alive if it was neglected... as it will have to be serviced by a dealer or indie. Just my two cents. Last edited by graftdesign; 09-04-2007 at 12:04 AM. |

I'd have to agree with GD.
It's got a fair amount wrong with it and is a very expensive chassis to maintain. Not eveything the seller states will be as easy to repair as was claimed. It appears to have been neglected and was probably dumped at auction I'm guessing. I'd look for a better example and suggest you'd end up ahead in the long run.

It sounds like a horror. One to run away from, as fast as possible.
The worst possible example of one of these, no wonder it is only $2,999.00 Probably $7,000 worth of problems in it, maybe more. The gold pimp grille is horrible.

I'd consider buying so I could put an extra 617.95 in it. Rip out all the fancy electronics, replace the adjustable suspension with straight shocks, etc . . . Just for the fun on it.

I posted it for just the discussion about it. If you have to have a S500, this bad, then you are in a lot of other trouble with your thinking.
I maintain that you find the nicest car, documented etc., that you can afford, and that car will serve you best, in the long run. You will be happy with the car and life.
