I need to replace one balljoint on my '84 300d and want to know if I can do it myself? Are there any special tools necessary for the job? I think my local Autozone will rent me the balljoint press, but I am wondering about that spring. Can you disconnect the lower control arm without a spring compressor?

Thanks,

Greg

not sure about yours but mine had a curve in it that the ball joint press couldnt work..I had to take mine to a machine shop to have it pressed out and the new one pressed in..they only charged me about $35.00 to do that job and it only took about 45 minutes

I have 126 1982 380 SEC

This is not a DIY job. The spring will not come off as long as you just remove the spindle and NOT the shock absorber bolts. There is a plate that you will need to hold the knuckle (spindle) to press the ball joint in. You can remove it with no special tools. I use a vise to hold it and a big hammer and knocking tool to knock it loose.
