Steve or anyone else who is familiar with bumper mountings:

Lately I have noticed that my front bumper is loose. I think it might have come from the time I hit the bump and cracked my oil pan. I can push on the front of the bumper and it will move in slightly. And on either end (see pic below), I can pull the bumper out about 2/3 of an inch.
My questions is, is there a way to tighten this? How can I check? I want to make sure that everything is the way it should be, and correct it if need be, which it does. Where do I start?

I am pulling the bumper out in the pic, you can't really tell, but it's loose! And from that bump I hit my undercarriage has a huge scrape/hole in it and other panels under there are cracked and the bottom of the bumper is really scratched, leading me to think it loosened the bumper.

Dave, considering I have tooken out my bumpers about a thousand times, here are my 2cents!!
-you say your bumper is loose, the only way for it to be loose without completely coming out is if the rail snaped out of place. There are two rails on the sides of the inside of your bumper. you can fix this by pushing the side in (with strength) If this doesn't work you might have a broken rail braket. to find out you must take out the bumper(it's very simple)
-open you hood and next to the two electric fans are two nuts, take them out. Then take out the tow hook covers which are on the bottom of the bumper(next to were the foglights should be)There you will find another two nuts. there are four nuts in total. On the side of the bumper(were your hand was in the pic but on the inside) there is a plastic stick like thing you have to push outward with your fingers. This will release the rail. you have to do this to both sides. then just slide the bumper off. the process takes me 2min. anyways after you have taken it out check the rails, both the ones on the bumper and the ones on th chasis. each rails is only like five buck. In the best case you may just have gotten the bumper off of the rail and just have to put it back on the rail..
let me know how it goes, i know my instructions weren't the best but it's like 11am and they're the best I can do
p.s I have eibach spring for $150

But why have you taken your bumper off so many times?

1)My brother also has a c-class w/ amg kit and he once hit a tire on the highway and broke a bracket.
2)also when i got my kit i couldn't wait to install it so I did It myself.
3)when i took it to the bodyshop they wanted to charge me alot for installation so I took it out left it there
4)got it painted and put it back.
5)then when i got my fogs
6)took brothers off again to adjust
And there were other times i just did it for the fun of it.

Temp sensor was easy, once you get the bumper off just slide it out. It's not really needed to remove the bumper, unless you want to move the bumper away from the car.
Anyway, I took pictures of the bumper removal. The guide rails are just fine... both on the bumper and the ones on the car. So now I don't know why it's loose! Later tonight when I go out I'll compare with another C-class and see if they are all a little loose.

Here are some pictures of the guide rails, and then some of the car without the bumper!

These are the guide rails on the car...

These are the guide rails on the bumper... (not sure you'll see them if you don't know)

My poor baby without it's bumper!

And now just the bumper.

My bumper is original. The date is stamped onto it and the VIN is still on it, but it definitly has been repainted, a real *****ty job of it too. I took some close up pix of the paint, what a joke!

Hristo,
I have the same thing with my rear bumper. Except something has happened because the driver's side of the bumper is slightly lower than the left side. Steve (MBenz) once gave me directions on how to remove that one... I think I will have to get those files (I have them at work) and get to checking that.
Anyway, AMG142, do you have any quick directions on how to change that? I have some pictures, but if you know, would you mind running through it for me? Thanks.

David, I know what happened. You need to slide in the bumper EVENLY and make sure both sides snap in. Sometimes I had the bumper in but one side wouldn't snap(no matter how hard I push). Do this and the bumper should be secure.
*As for removing the rear bumper, it's quite easy.
you have to remove the plastic piece the covers the lip o the trunk after that you remove 1 nut (middle of drunk mat and lip) then there are 2 nuts that need to be removed on the right side as well as another 2 on the left. then just slide the bumper off. hope it helps

Hristo, there are no sensors and the gap is normal.

Ok, I have a few questions.

What do you mean, the front bumper should snap into place. It seems to lock in and won't come out unless pulled really hard. But I never heard a snap or a locking sound, it just seems to guide in and then lock into place...

As for the removal of the rear bumper, could you be a little more specific? I'm not sure I follow you. So when the trunk is open, I take off the plastic lip, correct? How do I do this? And then there is one screw in the center that needs to be removed...
And then you say there are 2 screws on either side? Can you tell me where? Like down in the bumper or on the edge or what? Thanks again!!

Pics were included...I presume that you didn't loose the mail and information? Otherwise I can resend the message (I have it somewhere as well).

The front bumper slides over the guidance and has a clamp that locks the sides at the guidance. The old and new style bumper have different clamps, but the general idea is the same. You have to push/release the clamp from under the fender (there is an additional short rubber on the mud covers that provides access to the clamp after the rubber is removed).

The rear bumper is fastened with 5 nuts (13mm), 1 in the middle and 2 below each taillight. You only need to loosen these 5 nuts and the rear bumper can be taken off (beware of the clamp that holds the top front bumper edge at the fender/wheel well). Each side has a sliding guidance as well (like on the front).

greetingz,

David, the clamps that secure your front bumper at the sides is the lip that is on top of the guidance that is still on the car. It cliks in the bumper. The rubber I meant (to get access tp the clamp) was lying on the floor in your picture.

YES!!!!!

Well I was able to re-align the rear bumper today. Now it is perfect! The problem was that the guide rails were not screwed in in the full upright position (Some work must have been done to my car by PO, but bumper is original.).
Look in the pic below, You can see how the screw holes are slightly rectangular (kind of like an oval) so there is room for bumper height adjustment. Well it was set on the lowest seeting on the driver's side, and the mid setting on the passenger side. I loosened both and moved them up all the way.

Now here is a pic of the perfectly aligned rear bumper! I only wish I had taken a Before pic too to show the difference!! ARGHH!

Here are some pix of the car without it's bumper.

This pic of my rear bumper, shows both VIN stickers on it, leading me to the conclusion that the bumper and paint are original, but why would someone have removed it in the past?? Thought provoking...

And this.... what is this? It was on the rear passenger side all the way back behind the rear bumper... it's a grill of some sort... but I'm not sure what it's for... anyone?

********
Oh I almost forgot, I figured out why my front bumper is loose! All of the screws and guide rails are perfect. But the tough styrofoam(??) padding material seems to have shrunk over time. It doesn't fit tightly in place in the bumper, thus there is some play when the bumper is pushed! I am sure this padding is cheap, does anyone know if it can be purchased separately? Argh, I should have gotten part numbers while I had it out!!

The grill is for the air to escape as soon as you close a door or the trunk. The rubber flaps in the grill can be very annoying (opening/closing) once there is a lot of bass installed in the trunk .

The crash impact material in the bumpers do not need to be replaced. These are not tight fitting parts, but are meant to be rather loose.

greetingz,

Hristo,
There are no crash sensors in the front bumper. MB mounts their sensors in front of the radio.

Steve,
You say that vent is for air to escape the cabin or trunk? Ok, this makes sense... but where does it come from in the cabin and in the trunk?

Scott,
Yes, I have seen the crash sensor behind the radio. I thought this was only the control unit or something for it. How can it be so sure there's been an accident when it's not mounted close to the outside of the car? And is this sensor for both front airbags? If so, still how does it know which one to set off?
