ATF pan drain plug? C230K 2002

I planned on having the ATF filter and fluid replaced replaced at 44000 miles by the dealer. I just noticed that there appears to be a drain plug recessed into in the ATF pan. It is a plug with either a Torx or Allen head bolt, Does the filter need to be changed, or can I drain the fluid from the pan and replace with the same volume and buy the ATF filler cap? Or is this drain I see not for removing the ATF?

It is a drain plug. Its there so you dont dump "as much" atf when you drop the pan to change the filter. You should do the filter too of course no different than changing engine oil.

You may have a torque converter plug too, probably not as I think they were phased out.

Only MB fluid for the 722.6 or 722.9 trans is approved. No other Dex III has the additives required.

If the trans has never leaked you can do the repalce what you take out bit. Fill level is critical. MB uses SDS to monitor trans temp and confirm fluid is at 80C internal temp when they check it with the factory dip stick tool.

Thanks. I'll opt for the dealer replacing the filter and fluid even though there are no leaks of any kind. No jack stands so it is cramped under the car.
