"Ratcheting" noise through shifter handle on 126 AMG.

So after flying down the highway for a while in my 126 AMG, I went to pass someone and all of a sudden it sounded as if something broke loose in the tranny, and it was making a "Ratcheting" sort of noise at high speeds under accelleration. If I hold the shifter handle or even rest my hand on it the noise goes away.

What holds the shifter lever on?

How is it mounted?

I was wondering if anyone else has had this sort of issue with their Benz, and what the problem turned out to be. I thought it could possibly even be more serious and be some sort of bearing problem within the tranny.. Anyone's help is appreciated.

Nick

Use the search fxn. There are write-ups on how to disassemble the shifter and console.

I actually drive a ford focus at the moment.. my phantom is in the shop.. I grew bored of the spedometer only going to 200 mph so I had them tune it so I could take the barge up to 210

I retrofitted a hyrdraulic suspension from a 300TD on my Phantom so I can haul stuff around in it.

One of the signs of bad shifter bushings is that the car won't start in "P". Jiggle it around, twist the key and she'll start. This happened with my NON EURO 560SEL.

Those would be pretty bad. Mine is diesel and it vibrates a ton more than the gas V8, so I really notice them if they are tired.
