Hey guys,
I'm having a problem with my 86 190E. The freon is full and the AC is cold but after driving a while with it on the compressor stops turning on and the air gets hot. Then to get it cold again I have to re start the car. As soon as I restart it the air is cold again and the compressor works untill its goes out again ect... It seems to be on for about 5-6 seconds, then goes off for about 4 sec, then comes on again and the comp. seems to be working to hard. Is this true? In other cars I feel the comp. turn on like maybe once a minute. Can anyone tell me what's up? It doesn't seem to be the compressor or the freon, but the blowers bearings are wearing, and I can't turn the blower past the second setting without it making noises coming from inside the vents but that doesn't seem to be the problem either. Any help is highly appreciated! Scott

There is a system in your compressor control that detects belt slippage as well as other items like coolant overheat, low pressure cut off, freeze up protection, engagement delay etc. This system resets after cycling the key. It sounds to me like you may have a worn or loose belt that is causing the speed sensor on the back of the compressor to detect a potential lock-up and then turn the compressor off. Another possibility is a bad shock on the belt tensioner which allows the belt to shudder. You can often hear this in the car as a rattle when you first accelerate. I hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the reply. I hope it's just a hose. How much would that cost if it were? Anyone else have any thoughts? Thanks, Scott

I had a screaming blower bearing on a 240D and cured it by removing the intake screen in front of the windshield and squirting WD-40 directly onto the bearing via a very long piece of tubing I made up. They built the damn car around that fan. Hope you can get to yours.

My belt-tensioner R&R cost ~ $300 with $60/hr labor. Sorry that this is most likely your problem--may have to bite the expensive bullet. Cheers, Andrew Seidel.
