Mercedes WIS software

Finally got the WIS software working on an older laptop. The program recognizes the VIN on our 2001 ML, but not on the 1988 560. I found a bunch of generic data but can't even locate the 560SL in the drop down menu when the first 3 VIN characters are selected.

Any help with this? It looks like a pretty powerful program.

Thanks.

WIS help

* Don't believe that the R107 chassis (all of the '72-'88 SL's) is covered in WIS. It probably begins with the R129 chassis (the next SL after the 560SL).
For R107, you'll need to go to the factory DVD (or a non MB source).
* I've never talked to anyone who thinks WIS is particularly user-friendly. I personally think it's time consuming, if not impossible, to find search information (when you need it). You'll stumble over it later when you're not looking for it (and no longer need it) Learning to use WIS is a difficult learning curve (and I'm obviously not that far along). IMO the best way to get used to WIS is to play around with it when you're relaxed and have some free time. Research a problem that you already know the answer to and see if you uncover anything useful.
* There is a help section in WIS which is very long, no doubt very complete, and almost as cryptic as the data base itself.
* If someone decided to do a "WIS User's Guide", replete with search examples, it would probably sell very well (even to the MB community).

I'm not sure which version of WIS you're using, but the version I use (WIS-net) has plenty of information on the 107 chassis. If you want the most complete work instructions though, try to find a set of the MB Service Microfiche System. Back in the day, this was the best source of information for disassembly/assembly, technical specs., known issues, etc. MB apparently agrees, since its' still available to Startekinfo subscribers.

P.S. Yes, WIS is not exactly user-friendly! It takes some time to figure it out. The best way is to simply use it a lot.

I am using WIS version 5.1.2600 even though it does contain some of the SL in it, but it does not contain the 560 SL that is in question.

I personally use two data bases when working on the MB. One being WIS and the other is something that just has links to pdf files. I use this one when WIS does not offer a good enough picture, it seems that most of them are inverted and make them hard to see what it is in reference too.

I also find that searching would be difficult if you do not use MB's LNG, such as for steering column you have to search for jacket tube.

Thanks William, that is what I am finding. I had the PDF file for my 400E which I passed to the new owner when I sold it. I will have to buy another one for the 560. I have learned to get more info on the 2001 ML though.
