'89 W126 door lock question

I'm new to this and the Benzworld.org forums, so I apologize to those who may see this twice.

The car in question is an '89 420 SEL w/137K on it. Clean inside and out...quite clean, actually, though not perfect, which means it's perfect for me. I don't want to have the first door ding or anything.

I removed the driver's door interior panel today trying to figure out how to tighten the entire door handle assembly...which it turns out can be accomplished from the rear edge of the door panel, very easily after popping off a decorative plug, but now the door lock is stuck. It doesn't want to move down, it's stuck unlocked, which is good.

Moving the lock knob with as much force as I dare, and I can't see where it's binding or stuck. Anyone been here, before?

It doesn't help that I managed to lose a nut to the speaker box, and while there's no way it got that high in the door panel, I'm making myself good and paranoid about it.

I did remove some of the inner door plastic, thinking I needed to get behind it, but I didn't have to, so I didn't go digging.

I've had the car three days, and have put in a new radiator, tightened all the exhaust manifold bolts, fixed the left hood latch, yanked a non-working windshield washer pump, found the pair of replacement front turn signal lamps which were in the trunk don't match (the broken one turned out to be a dark amber euro one so I'll be searching eBay for a matching left one as now I have two US amber left side ones...like most folks, I like the darker ones better), tightened up the valve cover bolts, and ordered about $400 worth of parts it needs or is going to need.

The distributor cap/rotor/plug wires are obviously original, and it has a wicked engine miss. I figure a timing chain and guides are tired, too, as the PO didn't do anything with it and it has 137K on it. Otherwise, it's solid, but there's some stuff to do. This is good, as I get to be 'one' with my 'new' ride.

I'm owner three, and the first two knew each other pretty well. Usually a good thing.

I'm resisting the temptation to get a set of euro glass headlights...for now, but I see it in the relatively near-future.

Gotta love it when a car 10 years older and with twice the mileage of the vehicle it replaced feels more solid now than the car it replaced did on day one of torture, er, ownership.

Never mind, user error. I'd forgotten in the 13 years it's been since my wife had her '81 240D, you can't lock the driver's door with it open, either with the key or knob.

Duh.

Why I Love this Forum

Haha,
Just did exactly the same thing - changing out door locks on driver side of my '84 300sd- all back together but can't lock door. I do a search and land on this question, and - oh, yeah, and duh! Can't lock the open door. I go back outside to check and yes, the closed door locks perfectly! Thanks again, even when I should know better.
