Hi guys..

In my ongoing quest to resurrect a 1992 190e 2.3 I have come up with a procedure to repair non working power seat switches. It seems that this switch assembly is made up of five smaller switches each switch has two contacts that resemble old style points in the pre-electronic ignition cars.
These points are made of brass and are inclined to tarnish and carbon over time.so heres how to fix the problem.

this is for non-memory switch assemblies

tools
screwdriver ( a small one)
point file or emery cloth or sandpaper.....i used a point file
ice pick or soldering pick or something like that....i used a soldering pick
insulated needle nose pliers

procedure.

1. remove the switch assembly from the car.....if you don't know how email me and I will explain it to you.
2. note the top of the switch has a assembly points all around the top of the switch, you need to slowly and carefully separate the top of the switch plate from the bottom in a upward motion. I suggest separating one contract point at a time...do not use excessive force this is a finesse move.
3. note, there are five switch inside the assembly, each is caped , the caps must be removed to get to the contacts. carefully pry the caps off please note the last line of step #2 (these caps only have two contact points...warning pry upward from the bottom...nothing on top of the switch need to be released)
4.now you have all the contacts exposed clean all the contact points in the switches.
5. test you work, take the switch back to the car and plug in all the components,with the switches exposed. see what is working and not working
6. if a switch does not work try this. engage the contacts, using insulated needle nose pliers press the contacts together, if this works , you will need to bend the outer contact point toward the points ( i used a soldering pick) don't go crazy, a little bend goes a long way.

The worst that could happen is that you save the $80 bucks per switch with this procedure that takes about 30min for both switches

or buy new switches...well I,m off to figure out how to get all the stereo speakers to work again.....could it be the balance switch?
