500 SEL engine question
I know that the 500 engins that came to the US cars were different from the Euro engins. I believe the Euro had higher compression and different cams.
How about the engins shiped to Mexico and other countries. Is there any way to find out what market an engine was made for. I don't know and can't get the VIN for the doner car but was told it came from Mexico. It did not have the emissions (EGR, frequency valve, idle control, etc) the US versions had. I don't even know what year it is but was told it came from an 85 500 SEL with 89K miles. I know the 89K miles couldn't correct going by the wear in the valve guides, chain guides etc, so I can't believe any thing else I was told. Could anyone help? The car runs great but I would just like to know. Thanks |
Most "American" engines had lower compressions. That is North & South Am.
If you get the engine number possibly that could be checked for the type of car that it was IN? |
Thanks Doc,
I'll get the engine # tomorrow. |
Think its been addressed before
Euro 500 in the 82 85 range is about 235/ 245 hp??? while US is about 180/185 http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=200312&highlight=500+euro&page=2 |
If you got the VIN# and ran it on the free Russian site you could confirm if it was delivered new to Mexico. (I have never heard of any 500s that were)
Very likely it would have had a low compression engine so as to take into consideration the crap gas that was sold there. Unleaded ("sin plomo") gas was very hard to find in Mexico back in 1984. |
Doc,
I finally found time to get the number off the 500 block I had ask about. 117 961 12 003168 My 84 500SEL should have a 117.963. in it. Do you think there would be enough difference that I should change it to a 117.963 or just leave the 961 in the car. I just bought ($200) an 85 500SEL as a parts car which has the correct engine in it. The condition is unkown but it shows 250K miles which is about the same mileage as my 500. It was running until about 2 years ago and then abandoned at another shop. They had done brake work, valve guide seals, and some other minor work and the owner never came back for it. Thanks for any information you may have. |
