I'm getting ready to replace the plugs in my '84 380SE. Any recommendation on which plugs to use? Anyone had experience with the Platinum +4 by Bosch? The company makes a persuasive case for the plug on its web site. Thanks.

Ahh the plug thing again. Search the forum, Make your decision. Copper Plus are fine for your car.

Thanks, jeffsr. I did the search, and I now more more about spark plugs than I really wanted to know. I'll go with copper and buy a fine cigar with the $ I save.

I put the Bosch Platinum +4 in my 300E about a month ago and they do not seem to provide any significant change from the regular Platinum plugs. Although the plugs were changed as a matter of maintenance and because of a problem that I was trying to track down or fix. Fortunately, due to a friend in the autoparts business, they were no more expensive than the regular Platinum plugs.

Even though I have a Jocobs Omni Magnum Ignition, I stll us the copper cored resister plugs.

Thanks, Spiderman. I had to hunt for the copper plugs, but finally found them this morning at the MB dealer. They soaked me $3.50 per plug. I would have spit in their eye, but I need them now. About to embark on cross-country trip. Will use Fast-Lane next time, for sure. MB dealer just gave me another reason to stay away from him.

I'd say dont waste ytour money on it..I did.. there is a bit of difference for about 2000km...but thats about it..I tryed it on my 88300E 88190E...I got an 97E420Sportsline..I didnt even bother with this one..

Since Bosch had a hand with some of the electrical MB components, I would think that the plugs would be compatible with the state of the engine technology.

You can use them safely without any adverse effects, but I doubt that you would notice any real performance gains. Cars these days are monitored by computers, which makes instantaneous adjustments, while engine technology and tolerances have left very little "slop" (for lack of a better word) available for much tweaking.

For very early cars (70's and earlier), the platinum plugs actually hamper performance, not help. If your car came with copper-tipped plugs, stick with them.

Thanks, G-Benz. I put original equipment Bosch copper plugs in this afternoon. Even torqued them. By the way, the old plugs were regular platinum, and they looked OK, although there was carbon buildup around the base. Also, the gap had widened considerably (up to two-thousandths on a couple). They were properly gapped when I installed them only 8,000 or so miles ago. I wonder if some of the platinum did break down as I drove the car. Maybe the enlarged gap explains why there was an occasional miss at idle. Didn't do it all of the time, only occasionally and without explanation. I feel better with OE copper plugs. Will take it out for a spin tomorrow to see how she performs. I'll let you all know. Thanks.
