Ok, any hot tips or advice for getting out the top bolts holding the tranny to the engine?? I've got evrything else off and I've lowered the trans as far as it will safely go. Can't even see the top 2 bolts (well, I can see them just a little bit). Am I missing something here (like a secret procedure or a special tool). This thing is a real bear to get out.. It looks like I might have to use 3 feet of 1/2 drive extension. Am I right or is there some other way to get those critters out??

On a W116/M117, I got to the top bolts from the top using a combo wrench. Had to be a combo so I could link another combo to the open end for leverage. The natural angle of the box end (~15 degrees?) cleared the firewall nicely.

Allmost sounds like my the Opel Manta I used to have.
Had 15mm socket on 12" of 1/4 drive extensions, 18" of 3/8
extentions, and 6" of 1/2" drive extensions with 1/2" breaker bar. All this generated about 3" of curve, but it
worked. I have found out from working on German vehicles
that a "S" shaped box end works wonders. Snap-On has them
expensive about 25-30 dollars each. Comes in two different
box sizes on every wrench.

Well, I hate to say it but I have never taken a tranny out of a 124 body myself. I do not do R&R work. The last transmission I pulled was probably near twenty years ago.

But we do pull trannnies out of those cars at least once a month so I think I can say that those doing it use a wobbly socket on a three foot extention with either a airgun or a big breaker bar/pipe. Hard on the tools sometimes but easier I hear than a BMW that uses some goofy bolts.
