Pulled into a parking lot, shut down, went shopping then came back to a car that would not start. It kicked it in and died immediately. Each time I started it it would cut out in less than a second. Did not hear the fuel pump kick in so I assumed it was the pump :eek:. I decide to pull the relay. I took it out for a minute then plugged it back in. Fuel pump kicked in and I was able to get home.

Fuel pump has been buzzing loud for almost 2 years now has it finally gone south on me? If so then why did the re-plugging of the relay cause the pump to start? Do I have a bad relay? I have resigned myself to buying both but let me know your thoughts. Car is a W124.

Most of the time when the pump starts to fail, it will draw too much amperage and then kill the relay. You should check the amperage of the pump(s) and if the spec is too high, replace the pump(s) and relay.

Thanks Donnie! I'll take it in this weekend and have it looked at, save me the pain of getting under there. I have a feeling it is the pump, I have only one, so I have gone ahead and ordered it from you guys.

The current draw of the single system fuel pump should be under 8A. On the dual pump cars the draw should be 6 to 7.5A. Excessive draw will kill the relay as Benzmac has already stated, too many people fix the result & not the problem

My 1990 190E 2.6 has a buzzing noise from under the rear doors at the fuel pump area. I am guessing it is coming from the pump or the relay. The car usually does not start the first time you turn it over in the morning, only to start rough the second try, even out and settle in to a decent idle in a couple of seconds. SHould I suspect the fuel pump? Does the buzzing indicate that it is near its death time? Can I save to high cost of the fuel pump relay by replacing the pump ( or pumps ) now? I think there are two under there last time I checked I think I remember two. What are the test specs I should be looking for if I check the pumps for the current draw. ( could you treat me as a child and explain how to check the pump ...last time I checked one I thought I knew what I was doing and it tested fine...It left me stranded on the highway the next day!)
