AT Shift Link Clip -- What is this used for?

Shift linkage bushing on my 71 280 SL needed replacing, so I ordered Part # 112 268 01 50. I also saw reference to a AT Shift Link Clip as Part # 000 994 41 60 and figured I may need that part too. I'm now at the point of installing the bushing and finishing the repair, but I can't figure out if the clip is needed or not. From some other forum posts, it looks like the linkage arm (with bushing) just gets pressed on the peg of the tranny lever and therefore, no clip is needed. Anyone had any experience with making this repair that can give me some advice?

I remember a clip holding the shift rod in the lever. Is there one currently present? The rod should have a groove in the end if a clip is used
Anyway, that clip can't cost too much.

I believe that 000 994 41 60 replaced the original 000 994 02 60 clip. That would go on the end of the spring pin that goes thru the shift lever..

Thanks for the replies -- I'll get the linkage back together this weekend. You're correct, Chas., the clip only cost me $.69 so no big loss if not used.

It is not the cost of the clip I would be corcerned with, it is the possibility of over-looking it's purpose/position. There are two shaft holding clips are they both serve a locking funtion.
