does 21 mpg sound about right around town?

'87 300E with the high revving differential. Runs pretty good for a car that sat for 4 months. I'm only on the second tankful after the old gas.

Sounds right.

Sounds excellent !

Excellent mileage.

I used to get about 20 in mine around town, so that sounds about right. I'm guessing after you go through a few more tanks you will find the actual around-town mileage is 19 to 20.

I usually get about 19 with the 260e.... i think i need an O2 sensor though

I get 19-20 in a mix in my SE. Same motor, even shorter gears (3.46!) and more weight.

On freeway at 70-85 I can get no more than 22.

Only one differential ever in 300Es.

What you have is transmission without 5th-gear overdrive, which arrived later in the series in Europe and never in USA until W210.

that is great gas mileage for a 20 yrs old 6-cylinder. my 1997 e320 get's less than that, i think i get around 18-19 mpg for city driving, and around 26 for highway.

Well, the 1993 model year 300E had the 2.65 ratio, with the m104 motor of course.

Pretty sure ~'90-'92 300E's had 2.87 axle ratios. Might be ~'91 though, to coincide with the switch to first gear start.

The 300E 2.6 had a 3.27 ratio.

And 86 to 89s had 3.07.
