NEED PIC: M104/M103 Fan Clutch removal
So when taking off the fan/clutch, you are supposed to use this tool
http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes/mb103589004000.jpg Does anyone have a really good picture of where exactly you stick the tool? The service manual is not that helpful. Thanks in advance. Please post a picture.

Hi, sorry I don't have picture but try this.
facing the engine look down at the rear of the pulley. Look at about the 1 oclock possition, to your right. Extend the tool with the stubby end pointing strait forward (towards the back of the pulley), down to the centre-most edge of the pulley. While pressing the too forward against the back of the pulley, turn the fan slowly. There is a small hole in the back of the pulley and when this lines up with the tool, the stubby end will enter the hole. Holding the tool firmly in this position will not allow the pulley to turn and you can remove the bolt. Later on assembly. use the tool the same way to secure the pulley while you torque the bolt. Remove the tool as soon as you have finished. It's easy once you try it, it''s just tricky cause you have to feel for the hole in the pulley, you can't really see it well. Acky |

maybe I didnt spin the fan enough, but I was going after that area. I am finished with what I needed to do, but I think for future reference it would be nice to have a picture posted up online. Your description was very good though, thanks.

I have a pic of what I used (4mm alan wrench) i dont think it'll be very helpful..
However, if you look in the general vicinity where it is in my pic..you should be able to figure out where/how it works, you might have to spin the pulley a bit to get to the point where you can insert the tool to lock it out.. i dont know if you took off your distributor or not, but you really have to in order to see the area, it becomes like 100% clearer once you do. if the pic is too big i can resize it no big deal.. I should have taken better pictures and probably done a simple write up... ![]()
