300te...explain the suspension to me

1989 300te. The rear is riding poorly, so I ordered a set of accumulators. I went under the car today to see what gives. I don't understand. There is, what looks like a shock/strut (not inside the spring, but along side it) in the rear. At the top of it is a hydrulic line. I thought that the accumulator was round-ish...This (if not for the line going into the top) I would assume is a shock...does anyone have an exploded view of the rear suspension? I do not have a service manual.

Follow that line from the shock, it goes to the accumulator-which is located under the floor boards behind the rear seat.
