www.odometergears.com is great. They are really helpful and fast delivery. I used them twice for two different cars.

thank you crhenkel and donbryce for this link (http://www.odometergears.com/ ) but I am unable to see the pictures of all the gears I would not like to order the wrong one. Is this site still working or is it just a computer problem?

donbryce 11-07-2007 09:10 AM

It's their site. I'm having the same problem, can't view the pictures either. It's been like this over a week.

I see that it is going to be a long distance call from France, but i would call the phone number. I called him both times and he was very helpful and knows exactly what gear you need. Make sure you have counted the teeth on the gear you have before you call.
I will try to contact him about the web site needing work.
Good luck.

Do you still need the 14 tooth odometer gear in your picture? I am ordering from the odometergear guy today. I just spoke to him and he said he can add it to my order and drop ship it to you. You can pay me cost for it and not have to try to get ahold of the company on the telephone. The 14 tooth gear you need is sod for $25 US plus what ever it cost to ship to you In France. I am guessing that shipping will be inexpensive. PM me your shipping address if you want the gear ordered. I can get it today. I am ordering anyhow. I'll worry about payment later.

I talked to the sales deartment today. They know about the problem with their site and are having it worked on. Going to be a while. Call them and they can get you any gear you need.
The 14 tooth gear that doesnt have a photo any way. Go to the cable driven link and choose the 14 tooth gear from the pull down menu. If you are going to use a credit card you have to call them anyhow. No online credit card purchases yet. they said that was in the works on the fixed web site they are working on. You can pay by paypal online.

I went ahead and placed my order with odometergears.com I called the place directly, ordered both gears for my 16v. They should be here in a couple days.
He told me that the 14 tooth gear you need is $25 and $4 US total to ship to France. He has it ready to ship. Just call him or do it by paypal over his website. Go to the cable driven mechanical gear section on the site. The picture is up. Good luck.

THIS FORUM IS GREAT

Many many thanks to crhenkel and Jeff from odometergears.com.

I have received the gear, installed it on the odometer, set it on the car and now the device is back to duty (see picture 1) displaying again the right distance run so far including 1000km since the repair.

The full repair was:
° to create asperities on the shaft on the metal gear side (another solution would have been simply to change the metal gear),
° to change the plastic gear because I broke it accidentally and,
° install a piece of metal (picture 2) to prevent the shaft escaping from the hole (which was the initial problem).

The unit digit is not perfectly aligned, but it will be done in the future to have it nice from an esthetic point of view, when temperature outside wil be warmer.

repair tip

Yes, It is a fairly straight forward repair to get it to work again, but difficult to get the digits all lines back up the correct way.

Often the repair result it a working odometer and trip meter, but the odometer changed to a new number before the trip meter counts back to 0.

It is an alignment issue with the location of all the gears when the new gear is installed.
It can be hard to get it in the correct location so that the miles adds one once the trip reaches 10/10ths of a mile.

The trick is to rotate the numbers several times and note when the pickup arm on the new gear rotates the odometer to a new number.
This is all applied to when you install a new gear for the only silver lead gear.
It can sometimes also apply to when you are just replacing the small toothed drive gear, but not as much.

When you have to replace the control gear ( silver lead gear) the timing is always an issue because it is this gear that actually rotates one full rotation and then clicks the mileage forward one step to register an additional mile.
It can be out of sync with the trip numbers if one is not very careful.
Everything still will work and be accurately independently, but the two might not be accurate relative to each other, the mileage might not increase right when the trip meter shows an additional mile has been reached, it might happen when it shows say a 4 or a 6 instead.

SO glad your speedometer is working again, nice to hear a success story.
