What would cause the A/C compressor in my 190E 2.3 to quit working, tehn start up again and quit with no clear reason. It has done this twice and both times it was very hot outside and I had my wife and two small chilren in the car with me. Tat may not be relevant, but I usually drive by myself and have not had this problem while alone in the car.

You say quit and then start working. Did it start working after the car was cycled off and on? If it did it was something in the belt protection system. If it came and went while the car stayed running I would suspect a problem with the Mode door potentiometer. Lots have been writen on both areas.

The first time this happened, I drove about 30 miles home before turning the car off. Then about an hour later, I went back and started the car and it worked fine. That was last weekend. Today, after it quit blowing cool air ( I assume this means the compressor has shut off), I turned off the switch. I turned it on again a few minutes later and it worked fine for about ten minutes before it quit again.

I tried doing a search earlier. I got many responses, but none that looked relevant. I will try again using some specific words from your post.

Here's one possible cause. Most a/c systems have a a "self-protction" system that will turn off the compressor if it is over pressurising the a/c system. So, it is either truly over pressurising or the over-pressure switch is faulty or corroded and is turning it off. Either way, you probably are better off having someone check it out.

I've had several cars do this and this is not a DIY'er because the system will probably need to be evacuated and recharged with freon.

My ac would quit cooling (fan still blowing) when the coolant temp got to hot. My aux. fan fuse was blown and thermostat was not fully opening. AC worked fine basically until I got in stop/start traffic and the coolant temp went up. It would then stop cooling until temp came back down.

That is a bit of my problem. There are several "foreign car specialists" in the town where I live. One even had the means to pull an engine, but only if the weather is good. My best bet has been to use a worthy Chrysler mechanic, and feed him information from you guys as well as the shop disc. Its not ideal, but its what I've got.

Try disconnecting the coolant overheat switch mounted on the side of your water pump. This switch sends a ground signal to the A/C clutch relay which will shut down the system until the key is cycled. These switches can get lazy and come on to soon. Another problem is caused by belt slippage, especially if the belly pan is missing and you drive thru a puddle. Just a thought.
