W124 Fuel, Temp, Tach, Oil gauges not working... relay clicking?
 

Drove the car 1800 miles this past weekend form Dallas to Indianapolis just fine no problems at all... Then I get in it go to the video store and...

PROBLEM: The Fuel, Temp, Tach, Oil gauges are not working.

SYMPTIOMS: A clicking noise that sounds like it is close by possibly under the dash or in the engine bay. Its a light clicking noise like a relay isn't making contact or something of the like.

QUESTIONS:
Has anyone seen this same problem?
Do you know where this relay is located if it does exist?

just had the problem... the fuse that controls that stuff blew...

probably just an old fuse.... not an issue with any of the functions..

it's the clicking that really confused me at first....

I always make the mistake of not checking the fuse first...and most of the time that is the problem.

it freaked me out when it happened to me...because i was having an ignition switch issue at the time and thought they were all related.

I wish the ignition switch was as cheap as the fuse

I agree. Check the fuses and check them CLOSELY. They can look OK but still have a hairline crack.

I also learned this the hard way.

I looked a little more closely at it last night... all I could do without a Screw driver, and felt the box that is mounted behind the fuse box was where the clicking was coming from. I assume the relay is inside the box.

I tried to use all the functions of the car around the dash and I found that the cruise control doen't work either.

The list of things affected by this Fuse or relay is as follows:

Cruise control
Oil gauge
Temp gauge
Tachometer
Fuel gauge

I checked the Windshield wipers and they do work, the horn, and all flashers work too, as well as the headlights.

I'll let you all know what I find when I can get a closer look at the Fuses and inside the relay box.

does it sound like a turn signal clicking?
had it come up 2 or 3 times
never figured it out
but luckily it fixed itself...

All my guages worked though
except maybe unrelated is a quiver every once in a while in gas gauge & temp.

when it did happen
it would start if you opened the door or touched the brake
it clicked for 30 sec or so then stopped

oddest thing as I have no door open or seat belt warning system bell as I have a Euro

Crossing my fingers it stays fixed.

check to see if those effected are on one fuse.

there is no change with the application of the brakes or opening and closing the doors, this remains clicking all the time while the car is running.

I believe it to be something with a relay not making contact or a Fuse.

Still have not had a chance to check into the problem... hopefully this weekend

Replaced Fuse #5 and all is better now... Relay quit clicking and everything is back to working
