The usual morning start takes only one click and the engine starts purring like a kitten.

These days I am getting very hard startings everytime usually twice before it gets fired-up.

Members with any ideas please advise.

W-140 Hard Starting

Good Day David,

Year of Model W-140 (300SEL'92) and Mileage about 190,000KM
or 119,000 Miles done.

I remember having the butterfly valve at the airintake being clean-up due to dirt accumulating and after that onetime all is well but now experiencing hard starting over again.

Same here!

I have a 93 400SEL, it had been starting fine, just today started starting hard, actually wouldnt even start, until I pressed the gas pedal down a little and held it. It was really hot today, and later in the afternoon it seemed better.
Maybe plugs/wires? Is there an adjustment on the throttle linkage?

W-140 Hard Starting

Hi SClass4Ever!

Seems to me you have the same problem that I have someweeks back. Try cleaning up the butterfly valve in the air-intake!
I have been told by my BenzMec that it could be throttle problem.
Well sending in for a checkup tomorrrow morning and maybe will advise you outcome by end of the day.

Thanks Chris

Ill give it a try. What did you use, spray carb cleaner? Ive worked on cars since I was a teenager, but Im new to these German cars. They sure are different to work on than American and Japanese cars. Ill try cleaning that valve and a nice new set of bosch platinum plugs and some new NAPA Belden wires and see if that clears things up..

Guys,
Other than the hard starting trouble, are any of you experiencing problems with the instr. cluster having electrical problems? I currently own a 86 300E, but I thinking of purchasing a 92/93 W140 in the near future.

Yes Rich!

The instrument cluster gets short circuit every time an electrical connection is made. Like turning on the wipers sets the instrument panel up like a chrismas tree.
But apart from that you learn to live with it. Car runs and purrs like a kitten most of the time. Good Luck!

no probs w/ my inst cluster

Rich, Im not having any problems with my instrument cluster, 93 400SEL with 139,000 miles on it.
But Im definitely having some hard start when HOT conditions lately in our hot Minnesota days here recently. Anyone got any ideas?
