Strange grease in air plenum

Have a 2003 C32 AMG in the shop now to try and figure out why the computer keeps shutting down the #5 cylinder, very intermittent. Shop still working on that, anyways...when they replaced a fuel injector on #5 it was discovered that both air plenums were full of a grease like substance about the consistancey of ball bearing grease (alot of it both sides). Where did it come from. How could the car run so good with it clogged like that. It looked like it had been there awhile. The shop has no idea what it is, took pictures and posted it on one of the forums. Anybody have any ideas or have seen this?
