1986 190E with 102000 miles. My wife drove around corner and engine stopped! No indications prior to failure. I brought car home and did some checking: Coil meeets specs on ohm test, Spark to coil = yes; spark to distributor = no; spark to plugs = no. Fuel pump Relay I bypassed relay ( cross connected holes 7 & 8 = fuel pump
started running - could hear it in trunk). Checked with dealer tech and he encouraged me to "bring it in": said there were a whole host of items which could be wrong: ingition key tumblers, fuel pump, fuel distribution system, fuel filter, cap,roter, pickups, Ignition Module etc. I have decided it is either fuel pump or Ignition Module. Can anybody help me narrow doen the problem or give me some additional diagnostic help?

Not familiar with this particular engine, ignition, etc, but basic mechanics tells me you have already diagnosed your problem in this:

Spark to coil = yes; spark to distributor = no;

Sounds like you have a bad coil. Check for cracks. Err!!!

This is what I first posted, then re-read your post and noticed that you had checked your coil.

I am guessing that you have done the obvious and replaced the coil wire going to the distributor? Depending on the wires, you may be able to interchange one of the spark plug wires just for test purposes.

Best of luck,

Thanks Smalltime and Shop Forum

First let me express my gratitude to the Forum members and the idea. I was able to successfully diagnose the 190 E ( Fuel or Electrical ) and purchased the exact part ( Ignition Module - $374 at dealership ) I installed it myself ( two nuts and two plugs ) and was confident the car would start -- it did!!!. Yea me, Yea Smalltime and Yea the Forum. Boo the Mercedes Service Advisor who wanted $2240.00 for the repair. This is the first time I have ever presumed to believe I could find enough information and aid on the net to attempt a tricky diagnosis and repair. I am a communications consultant by trade and normally I wouldn't even consider it; but the Service Advisor's attitude left me no choice. I can't wait to ride by there tomorrow and wave. Thanks again. fejiii

Good deal. You mean my post actually helped? After that message it made me think about the many GM HEI distributors I have seen. Hmm, makes me want to start turning wrenches again. Haven't really done that for a few years.

Where else can you find information about your Benz than here.
Not all of us have the total answer but put together and you have the whole.
I have reaped so much from my fellow members that I can't begin to give enough thanks in return for the small amount I have given.
