Someone ID this M117 for me
I was supposed to be getting a 560 engine for my Duchatelet 560SEL, but thats not what arrived.
My best guess is that it's a euro-spec 500. I won't be able to post a picture until tuesday but I can tell you its got two seperate headers, no crossover. There are also some oil lines off the oil filter housing as well as some other device attached to it, I didn't look too closely. Question, did the 86+ 500 engines have the large or small distributor? what about an EHA on the fuel distributor? I'm gussing this one is pre-85, theres nothing electronic on the fuel distributor.

Is there not a motor number on it? What are the first six digits?

All EZL equipped M117's had the large distributor, which in theory means any 9/85 on cars. The EHA wasn't fitted prior either as this was for the KE jet, which also came in 9/85. There are no 5.6's prior to this date as such, unless its a one off prototype which is unlikely.
It sounds like it might be a pre 9/85 euro 380/500. This is all assuming that its an unmolested, standard engine.... I have a 5.6 822 in my pre 85 car, that I put the small distributor on and a K jet fuel injection for simplicity. Only the engine number will tell us what you've got! |

Yeah I was in a rush to leave work saturday and really only had time to unload it and split. When I get back to work on tuesday I'll be able to go over it a little more closely.

Ok, so I was completly wrong, this one is a M116! crap!
the twin headers made me think that it was a 117, I thought they only came on a euro 117 engine, but I guess not. tried to find the engine number, looks like it has been ground off. cylinder heads and block both have 116 part numbers. So what all aluminum 116 engine had an oil cooler (off the filter housing), dual row timing chain and dual down pipe manifolds with a two piece oil pan? I just now remembered they would stamp the years into the cylinder heads, I'll check on that tomorrow.

Chances are it's a 420, though it could of course be a 380. It's hard to tell from just pictures, and this is why the engine number is pretty crucial. Of course, head numbers even could help, someone with a 420 can say if those match their numbers.

If its only got K jet and a small distributor, its probably not a 420, more likely a 380.

Looking at the right valve cover I see a small bracket that holds the air cleaner on. I can't make out the left one. Because it has a small bracket attached to the valve cover and a rubber mount on the bracket indicates it is a "small block" which will either be a 380 or a 420. All the 420s I have seen have black valve covers but I know they could have been changed. The 500 and 560 were "big blocks" and don't use the extra bracket for the air cleaner mounts as they are a little wider. They put the rubber mount directly on the VC. As for the timing chain, a lot 380s were converted to the double row chain the first time the single row chain breakes.

So what 380 powered model had an oil cooler, but two piece oil pan? (Was there ever an aluminum block euro 350?) Look at #5, no idle air valve.
