Where's this wire go?

On my 1998 C230.

On the drivers side - the grey wire that goes to the foglight and seemingly disappears into the mass of the lamp unit. (Before I go tearing everything apart). Tried grounding, didn't work.

Yup, tore it off trying to get a stuck, burnt out light buld out. One problem to make another!

anything not working, lights, dash outside temperature display?
I have a `98 C230 tomorrow morning I'll chk to find if I can tell what your describing.

Nope...just about everything else is perfect on car.

That darn fog lamp bulb was stuck in its holder and I got this wire too tight.
It seems to go from the bulb holder (with it's 2 browns) and disappears inside the rest of the headlamp assembly where I gather it connects to something...which I can see making more of a problem trying to take apart than maybe finding some other reasonable place to tie in.

I'm having trouble finding the grey wire your describing relating to the fog light.

The bulb holder has 3 wires total...2 are brown and one is Grey (on mine)...so I suspect whatever your 3rd wire is would help.

I see this same color on the other (passenger) side fog too...although it too disappears into that whole headlamp assembly.

I appreciate your trying...but if like mine, not much more than "it exists" can be determined without taking things apart...I understand that may not be possible.
