Has anyone here installed one of those aftermarket drink/cup holders, the kind that is installed on the door and flips outs? My previous Mercedes had the empty center console where I was able to install one of the flat, duo cupholders. But my 1991 420SEL has the center console/glove compartment combo and if I want cupholders I will have to install them on the doors. So I am looking into installing one of those cupholders on the front passenger door.

I normally hate drilling anything on an interior part, like a door, because I don't like leaving holes and because I worry about what may be behind the door panel when I install the cup holder. Has anyone installed one of those holders? Did you have any subsequent problems after the installation? Do you have any suggestions? Tips? Advice?

The former owner did a pathetic job of installing it just under the door latch on the driver's side. I took it off, and now have to look at the screwholes everytime I get in the car.

An alternative cupholder is a simple device made by Rubber Queen that has a wide rubber strap that slips between the windowglass and the door, and the holder hangs down from the strap. What's great is it's unbreakable, removable, comes in different colors, and can be easily moved without leaving behind any damage. It's model # 5121 Cup & Can Holder.

Your solution is simple and to the point,but the problem is it is meant for the the proletariat.It would never do for an attorney.If an attorney accepted such a plausible answer, he or she could never be considered as a candidate for congress under our two party system.I certainly hope nobody out there thinks America is still a Demecracy.Our statesmen have all been replaced by attorneys.

We are in the process of subpoenaeing MercedesShop logs so that we can ascertain your true identity and then proceed to slap you with a Summons & Complaint. But seriously Autozen, you are missing the bigger picture here. Sure, there are lots of lawyers in government, sure we have taken over one of the world's formerly great democracies, but it is all perfectly legal. You see, Autozen, lawyers in government are all part of the Federally mandated Full Employment Act, Public Law
No.: F.U.-666. And it all works real well for everyone. You see, lawyers go to Congress, lawyers make laws that only other lawyers can interpret and then you little proletariats have to hire big, mean lawyers to figure out just what the heck the other lawyers originally meant to write into the law. Thus more and more lawyers are able to be gainfully employed. (And thank God for that, since we otherwise have no other marketeable skills).

But the trickle down effect works even further. Lawyers, thus enriched, are able to buy and drive big bad ass Benzes and Bimmers and then, when we tire of them, we sell them to the proletariat for ridiculously over-inflated prices. It is then, and only then, that the proletariat drive Benzes. :)

In that vein, I just saw a bumper sticker that only in California, or in Washington D.C. could it possibly make sense. The sticker said: "My kid's lawyer can beat your kid's lawyer."

Autozen, do you know why scientists prefer to use lawyers in the lab instead of white rats? Because there are more lawyers available and the scientists don't get as attached to lawyers as they do to the rats. (drumroll!)

But really Autozen, you need to get over your anti-lawyer phobia, it is bad for your health man. Plus you will get sued and who, except for other lawyers, wants to see that. Instead, apply to law school, pass the Bar exam, and join me in making fun of the proletariat.

...thanks for the tips. I think I am going to go ahead and order the cupholders from drinkholder.com. they look pretty good and are not too proletariat for my taste.

BTW, thank you for indulging my feeble attempts at legal humor. I know I am probably off topic, so thanks and thanks for all the great Benz tips that I have received from you guys here.

This drinkholder thing has been discussed already here on the forums, and those same overpriced plastic ones that the dealer and drinkholder.com sells for $39.95 are obtainable for about $4 at outlets like WalMart.

I hated the one I had that was installed by the previous owner, it was crap, and was always in the way of my left leg when folded down. And that was one of the expensive ones from a Mercedes dealer!

I'm not sure what Jim means when he says that the screws will not damage anything behind them. The screws will permanently damage your door panel, will cause the batting under the outer skin to wrap around the screws, and unless the door panel is removed to install it, you will never be sure if it is anchored properly. If this were not true, the manufacturer wouldn't provide double stick tape to secure it.

As for the "proletariat" Rubber Queen cupholders, they come in a variety of colors, won't break like the $40 one will, are not permanently installed, so they do no damage to your interior, and can be tossed into the glovebox or trunk when you're not using them. You can even move them to other vehicles.

Besides, a true motoring enthusiast would never be caught dead eating or drinking in their car...:p

Longston, old boy, it means exactly what it says! It won't damage anything behind the door. That answered the question that was asked. The screws are short enough so that they just protrude a little (if any) when the thickness of the cup holder's back plus the thickness of the door's material is considered.

It's obvious that the front side of the door will undergo some damage due to the screws. And the leather will have holes in it.

Therefore you need to put them where suggested, do it carefully and finally, leave them there! It's a permanent installation not meant to be removed.

I've done this on at least 5 MBs with no difficulty. And sold the cars with them in place. The new owners were delighted with them as an added 'touch'. I've also put them in both cars shown below.

Longston, I use those cheap rubberqueen ones now, I have the flap tucked under the center console on both sides. It works ok for 3 dollars a peice. When I have guests in the car that I dont want them to see it, I can remove it without leaving a scar or mark.

The ones sold at the dealer are expensive, poor design, and can leave marks on the doors. You can use the adhesive instead of screws but it proably wont be as sturdy. If not placed properly, those dealer ones get in the way of your leg/knee and can risk spilling stuff. Also, if you have it attached to the door and a soda can in it, when you slam the door shut when getting in or out of the car, suprise! you might have a little soda to clean up.

Geez, this is getting worse than an "oil" thread.

None of these elegant little contraptions that attach to the door or window appear capable of holding a 32 oz Big Gulp. If you want to be a true patriot, loyal to the American cause, why not pull out the center console compartment and install a "real" cup-holder. That cheezy console is held in by 2 screws. Once you pull it, cut some surplus shag carpet to fit the area, install your mega cupholder and sip in peace!
