I worked on my w126,the cable broke,I could not open. It was a pain to replace.you may need a newer latch. Have you oiled the old one?Maybe springs are shot,a sticking cable will not let it lock either.

Replace the cable is the only way to fix it . But then it could be the latch thats broken .If hood was down , and your unable to open it, then yes the cabe is the poblem .But if it wont stay shut then the latch is the way to go Take it out and look at it ,come on get stuck in might be a spring like post above .

one time I had that problem on my w140.It was the handle inside the car,I had to put in in the right position.I finally oiled the cable.
