Installing a keyless alarm on an 88 300TE?
 

I was looking around and is this possible?

Bestbuy has a basic one for like $150....
Are they generally universal or will it not work with my 300TE?

Anybody here installed a keyless arm system on your car?

That unit or almost any other will likely work. Door lock output must have a pulse duration of about 2 seconds, and you will need to hook up a pair of not-included relays. Checkout:

The one at Bestbuy is probably more than you need and the $ is a bit high.
Both Ebay and places like Crutchfield.com have several options that work great for the keyless entry install. You just tap into the blue/gree/yellow wires at the vac pump and the install is easy. Try looking around for a basic keyless module. Unless you think you really need an "alarm", you can use a $60 or less keyless module and it is fast and easy. Look at this for an example...

I used one just like this on my 16v and it works great.

Keyless alarm or keyless door locks? If locks, have done in both an 86 W201 and a 87 W124. Both needed the above mentioned relays (see the links) and both needed a disarm wire to the factory alarm. The damn things would arm the factory alarm, but would not disarm upon unlocking without the pulse to the factory alarm module. I guess its also a keyless alarm using the factory system.

Also, there is an "Aussie" Keyless Entry for sale on some of the boards that is a basic commercial unit with the relays already wired up and connectors installed, said to be plug and play. Its rather pricy but weigh your time and learning curve.

I put a Clifford alarm system into my wife's 1989 190e. The Clifford is like any other. I think half the brands are made by the same factory in France, including (I think) Viper.

I hooked up the alarm, the door locks, the parking light flash for the lock/unlock, and the starter immobilizer. None of it was particularly hard, but it took a long time. There is no way that Best Buy can do a decent job with installation included in the price.

The Clifford has adjustable pulse duration for the door locks, so you just set it to the long duration for the Mercedes vacuum locks (no need for fancy relay set up). On the 190e, the vacuum pump is uder the rear seat. I am not sure where it is on the big sedans.

Do it right. Don't use those stupid blue connectors that tap into an existing wire. Solder it and use shrink tubint.

The install is really fairly easy. The vac pump is hard to miss, I think it is under your rear seat like the 190E maybe a diff location but still under the seat. The install is straight forwards really. If you are jsut worried about unlocking it is even easier. Get a power and ignition connection from behind the kick panel on the left side on the drivers side at the main connections ( right where the tip of your left foot goes is about where it is at. Run the wires under the trim plates and carpet and rails along the drivers side of the car and under the rear seat. Splice in to the vac pump line that controls the door locks and that is the gist of it without a lot of typing and speifics. There are several write up s on it and they are all about the same, W124 and W201 cars are similar in the install.
I think you can do it give it a shot and ask questions as you go if need be...its how we all learn. No matter what it will be done better than Best Buy. Those kids that do the installs there know the inside of the ash tray of the Hondas and Acuras, but they dont know anything about the Mercedes. THey once told be I needed to add a mechanical selonoid to operate the door lock knob case there was "no way to make the stupid locks MB designed work", Circuit City told me it "just cant be done on those old Mercedes cars"
Do it yourself and it will be right and no mishaps with them damaging the car cause they dont care.
