I will look at a '92 500E this afternoon with 120K miles on it. Is there anything specific to this model that I should take a second look at or I should be specially concerned about? Fluid leaks, gasket problems, rustspots (I live in the frozen north) worn components not easily identifiable etc. The owner has all the service records (third owner) and according to him they are up to date. Your help is appreciated.
Thanks

Alex

do a search for 500e

Hi,

If u do a search you can find things that other 500e owners might recommend you check out

mostly just make sure it has all its service history and u it checked out by someone will 500e experience

500e are meant to be driven hard...so be careful

check tie rods in front, fan switch in dash, self-levelling suspension for leaks, ps pump for leaks, listen carefully for timing chain noises; I got my car this past Feb with the same mileage on it and those are the items that need attention and could cost a bundle if not taken care of. Good luck and don't forget to reply to the 500E roll call when/if you get it. If your near connecticut...next summer there may be, hopefully, a 500E/E500 gathering and track day at Lime Rock Park in NW CT.

Also, have the engine mounts checked. The heavy V8 tends to play havoc with those, especially on the W124 chassis.

In my opinion, if the car has the original suspension setup (not play with) as the same with other engine/chassis components, you're on the plus side. Aftermaket setups usually change the behavior of the car, and many times it would signal an owner who really pushes the car to its limits, which in your case, is not good news.
