Spark Plug Wire & Ignition Coil

Hi

My car have rough vibration, I have removed the spark plug & ignition coil. How do i test their conditions?

Thanks

first of all what car and model yr are we talking about?

Previous post indicates W202 C220 1994.

The Engine is 111.961 Chasis 202.022 . Yes its C220 1994 model. I have pulled the car apart to access the Ignition Coil # 0001500480 & Its harness # 2025403809 . The harness had live wire contact due to disintegration insulation.

I want to firstly rule out the Spark Plug wire, then the ignition coils. I had already repaired the coil harness (i think? I need a detailed schematic on this) and replaced with 4 new Spark Plugs. When I put all this together yesterday, the car just shook. May be 2 coils not firing? I dont have a diagnostic tool to show, so now i have pull everything apart again, Wanting to test them individually.

The symptom now is different from before I pull apart the 1st time. Initially was no power but now there is power but it shakes violently when stationery.

The wires are solid copper core & have less than 1 OHM resistance. The ends should be marked 1K OR 2K OHMS.

i just discovered MB sold me the wrong spark plug. Its for a 1.8 litre car & not 2.2 litre. The difference is 0.8mm gap versus the correct 1.0mm gap. I think this should not effect the car shaking but only its feul effeciency right or am I wrong. Returning them tommorow & hopefully can rule this one out & concentrate on the wire & coils only.

As long as the rest of the plug specs are good - you should be able to simply regap the plugs you have.

I just use my multimeter to test the Spark plug wire & set the ohmmeter to 2000. This is the readinfg I got. Lead number 1=1, 2=1762, 3=varied & not holding, 4=1795. This seems to confirm wire number 1 & 3 must be back. I tried this several times including with the Spark Plug connected to the leads. I get simmilar results. So it seems nothing wrong with the coils. But how do i replace the copper beru wires, it look difficult to remove the rubbers surrounding the connectors.

There is a slight tear on the rubber, wondering if this is OK?

Not sure if the problem is really in the wires.
I think it is in the connectors ( shown in your right picture ).
If you want, remove the wires from the connectors & then check the resistance on each wire & each connector. ;)

Thanks. The spark plug connector can be unscrewed from the wire but how do I remove the Resistor Plug? What ohmmeter reading do I neet to set at?

OzC36 12-17-2007 08:16 AM

Are you absolutely sure that you re-connected the wires correctly to the right coils and plugs?

Can I ask if I use my Ohmmeter to read my 4 ignition wire plugs. Discover Number 2 & 4 have a good reading But Number 1 & 3 have no reading. My question , does that mean all 4 plugs are good?

Back to my question, is how to remove the Resistor Plug end from the Spark Plug Wire? I can remove the Suppresor end by unscrewing it.

I would recommend that you should buy a new Ignition Wire set. They wear out and this set is cheap to replace. I use these guys for parts and found that they are very efficient and ultra-reliable:

Thanks again

Oh yes they do!

I just checked on that specific part and did everything except pay for the part. They sure do ship to Australia. I have done at least 15 orders through them and I can strongly recommend them.

My bro' in law initially had the same negative auto-response from the site and then got a confirmatory email from them confirming their pleasure to ship to Australia. Try some alternatives and the site will work correctly.

They DO ship to Australia!
