I have a 1981 240D that I'm having a problem turning the ignition switch when I insert the key. So far I can turn the ignition back and forth and it will allow me to start it but it is getting worse. It does not want to turn out of the lock position. Has anyone had this problem before ? Is it the ignition switch or something to do with the steering lock ? I'm afraid I'm going to get stuck. thks.

Go to diesel discussion and look for the one titled something about the key hard to turn. I have just completed replacing the tumbler and steering lock in my 300D and there are some pics posted there. To me this is a good diyer type of job.

The most important thing to note here is: don't delay or procrastinate in repairing this! You're playing russian roulette (er, should that be german roulette?) if you wait too long. You'll be stopped to fill up in the worst part of town at 2 AM, and the ignition will decide to not turn at all, and you'll be very sad that you waited to fix it.

Anyway, look at the "Key would not turn in ignition" thread in the Diesel Discussion forum.

Thank you both for the replies. I'm going to try and take it out tonight.
