Mercedes Road Rally Across the Midwest: Thinking of organizing may-june. $1000 prize
What would you all think of competing in a 1,000 mile road rally across the midwest sometime in end of may or early june? I was thinking of starting in SanAntonio, Tx, traveling along the Rio Grand river, going up into Roswell and Santa Fe, New Mexico, through Southern Colorado, including Leadville (highest elevation city) the final leg being Glenwood Canyon (One of the most beautiful stretches of road in the nation) and the finish line in Glenwood Springs. (World Famous Hotsprings) I'm thinking of doing this over a 4 day period in 250 mile or so increments. Map of what I'm thinking.

Whoever can get closest to the goal time while picking up items at checkpoints is the winner. Prize of $1,000 or so. :D I've driven most the stretches in Colorado, and the part from leadville to Glenwood Springs will be one of the most beautiful driving experiences of your life. :o I've never been to Roswell, but thought it would be fun. I absolutely love San Antonio, I think a row of 100 benzes starting at the Alamo would be great. Hopefully we would get some volunteers to give people technical assistance if needed along the way. If I get alot of interest from this, I will do some more planning and start organizing hotels, lunch stops, things like that; try and get a good group discount on decent hotels. This would not be an expensive trip, but I think with the $1000 competition, the fellowship of other mercedes owners, and the scenery would make it fantastic. I know alot of you live in the midwest, it may be a haul for some of us, (I personally live in Wichita, Ks 8 hours from start or finish line) but it would be worth it. Please post your thoughts on this thread if you would be interested. Moderator- perhaps you could make this sticky so people can see it, so I know who is interested. |
i would deff do this, but im in illinois so the drive there is a little too long for me. but man ive always wanted to do something like this. great idea, ill be thinking about it.

You'd probably get a lot of positive responses from those that live in the area. Starting in SA would be great for me, and after Leadville I'd probably go up to Steamboat to hang at the cabin. Sounds fun, but I can't commit because I have two small boys - I can commit to little at this stage in life. I'd be interested and I'd try to plan for it.

There's been alot of interest in the diesel forum with it... The drive from Illinois would be worth it E420, or you may look into having the car shipped to San Antonio if you have the $. The 99% official date is may 28-31, 2008. I'm working on a website and will hopefully have it up soon. I would love to see your amg POS. I have never, never, seen another 1980s 500sl other than my own, let alone an AMG. Bring your other benz as a chase car and your boys the pit crew.
We would most certainly divide into a modern and vintage class, 1994 being the cutoff for vintage. Further specialization, such as diesel/gasser, things of that nature all hinges on how many sign up. |
Is there gonna' be a prize for the loudest car?
Sorry E 420, I couldn't resist!!! :D |

Entry fee?
A diesel friend from this board and I are interested if you do have this rallye.... A visit to the friend in Texas, then up to CO, and I can visit my family. That would be awesome. |
I'd be interested...Not sure which car I'd choose to take...but I'm sure it would be a good time!

Sounds like fun even though I doubt I could participate. I's certainly love to see the pictures!

"Entry fee?" iwrock
The entry fee wouldn't be more than $100.(need to cover winnings, trophy, maybe a t-shirt, etc.) I would get a group discount on hotels and try to keep it under $250 too. I don't want to price anyone out of this so I'm trying to keep it reasonable. If your really on a budget, there are campsites at a few of the stops as well. I'm calling it the Silver Star 1000. Date is May 28-31. Hopefully have the website up by X-mas. I'm hoping you guys will have some ideas on websites, clubs, or people to get in contact with to so I can get a good turnout. I got the idea from an Autoweek article that talked about a Texas road rally. Five star hotel, drive a new Porsche if your car breaks down. Pretty cool setup, BUT COSTS $5000 A CAR. Crazy. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...2&d=1197790076 |
