fuel line replacement for 560SEL
while replacing the cam cover gaskets on a 1991 560SEL, noticed the two fuel lines crossing the right (driver's side) cam cover appeared to be old. i've decided to remove them and have the rubber portion replaced. one of the lines goes from the fuel distributor on top of the engine, changes to about 18" of rubber hose and then connects to a steel line which then runs underneath the vehicle. is it possible to take a screw driver and remove the rubber hose from the steel line without damaging the steel line? then, if that is possible I want to take the line to a high pressure hose shop and replace the rubber portion for both.

The hose is crimped on. You can buy replacement hoses from this site and others.

When taking the hose off, do I simply take a knife and cut if off at the connection?

Can anyone add any additional info? I would like to replace the 2 lines that cross over the left side rocker cover. One is high pressure from the fuel pump. the other is the one going to the suction line cooler for return to the tank. It seems like they are pushed on to a steel line with barb end on the line. Do they need to crimped in some way? The mb dealer has the lines with fittings attached, very expensive. Is this the same fuel line shown on the forum buy parts. Thanks Topgun

Just take the entire hose to a hydraulic hose shop and they can replace the rubber part. They will cut the rubber part out and crimp the new rubber piece in.

ended up order two new fuel lines from Phil here on the forum. Mercedes has replaced one of the lines entirely. the replacement is about six feet long and dead ends somewhere under the car. I will need to get the car up on ramps so that I can see where it attaches....

just informed that when the fuel lines are replaced by crimping in a replacement for the rubber component, the line may fail causing an engine fire. This must be the reason Mercedes chose to offer the line replacement rubber and steel lines included. 91 Octane at 100+ PSI is just not worth it....call Phil and order the Mercedes drop in replacement fuel lines.........fuel fires are BEYOND SCARY!!

Husky Man:
If I may ask, how much did Phil want for those fuel hoses? I assume they are a special order item as they don't feature in the regular search results pages for Phil's site or the others with which I'm familiar. My local dealer wants about $55 for the return line from the fuel distributor to the fuel cooler, but I don't yet know the price for the longer supply line. Thanks in advance. |
