See sticky thread "W220/C215 instrument cluster recall"...

MB should expand this campaign to include additional models, like the W210 (yours) and the W208 (mine).

The issue is the same. The conductor leads on the mylar ribbon cable attached to the displays deteriorate over time, causing loss of pixels on the LCD displays...for most, this relates to the temp display and the shift indicator.

There was a post at one time by an electronics whiz who was able to painstakingly fix his own using a conductor pen and strong magnification...seems like a daunting task to me though.

Repair

There are several shops in the US and in Canada and Europe that will and can fix the display pixel problem. It is very common in the W210 and W208 and MB has done nothing about it. I have the problem with my 2003 W208 Cab and I am living with it for now. Most shops that do the repair warranty it for 2 to 5 years and charge $200 - 400 for the repair. SOme will guarantee that they will ship the cluster back in one day. makes me wonder exactly what I am paying $100 per hour for......BUT...the alternatives are live with it OR pay MB $1100 for a new cluster and install. If you get a working used cluster the dealer will charge you about $200 to plug their computer into the car and "code" the cluster so it will work with the car, which I am told is required if the clsuter is not original to your car, it is not neccessart if you have your original one repaired and reinstall in the same car. I will likely have the repair done before it get too warm again and I start driving the car again.
Good luck. Do a Google search for Mercedes instrument clusters repairs and you will find several that can do the reapair. I dont know of one that is better than another.
