1998 e430 avantgard stops shifting

I have a 1998 e430 and the transmission stops shifting after a random time driving the car.

Even if I change the position from D to 1, 2, 3 or 4 nothing happens.

The shifting works if I turn off the engine and turn it on again, but stops shifting after some time.

If I change to N and back to D the problem continues and I hear a sond like a computer click comming from the transmission. I also feel a stronger transmission sensation moving the gear back to D.

I live in Brazil, with tropical weather, so I think that it isnīt a cold weather shifting problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Since the transmission is 100% computer controlled, you need to have that system scanned for codes.

Check that transmission fluid hasn't leaked into the gearbox ECU via a faulty wiring seal on the gearbox.

If it has, clean the ECU out with alcohol (not the drinking variety, isopropyl), allow to dry, and reconnect. And obviously repair the seal
