Simple question. What size is the bolt that secures the harmonic balancer/pulley to the front of the crank shaft on an M104 engine? ('95 C280)

Should be a 27mm or 1 1/16in. You can use either one, but it's going to be tight! Do you have the crankshaft holding tool that goes on the flywheel? Makes breaking that bolt loose, and torquing it back much easier.

Wrench size?

Thanks for the quick response. I just need to turn the engine to access the torque converter drain plug.

You are welcome. Always good to see people keeping the maintenance up. :)

Trans fluid type

The specs for my transmission (722.424) call for a fluid that meets Dexron III/Mercon specs. Is there anything else I need to know? Is there a particular brand that anyone recommends?

I suspect MB Medic thought you were going to LOOSEN the crankshaft bolt. You do not need any special "hold-down" tool if you're merely trying to rotate the engine in order to locate the converter drain plug. As viewed from the front, you'll turn the engine CLOCKWISE until the converter drain plug is positioned for draining.

As far as brand name goes, consult the literature that came with your MB. Any major brand of Dexron-III will work just fine. Be careful not to overfill.

Thanks, Mike. Thanks MB Medic.
