Brake Pedal free play

Hello, all. I've been doing a bit of tinkering on my recently purchased '97 S420 and one of the things I'm trying to get right is the feel of the brake pedal. When I apply the brake, it feels like there is 1/2 to 1 inch of "slop" in the pedal before it makes contact with the rest of the braking system. Is there any way to adjust this? I looked it up on alldatadiy.com but there wasn't a whole lot there that was useful.

The brakes themselves work good, with plenty of pads and fresh fluid, and a good feel (once the pedal makes contact, that is!).
