I have a 1991 560SEL and a couple of days ago the A/C blower stopped working. I have looked at the fuse (aux fan?) and that looks fine and tried different settings (auto/min/max, temps, etc) and it does not work. I am assuming that its either the fan motor or some regulator that is broken.

I took it to a shop to get an opinion and even w/o looking the guy said that this is common and the "expansion valve" located somewhere above the pedals must be choked and needs to be replaced. Somehow I don't buy that. Any feedback?

Cheers, Raj

Going from memory(fingers crossed), the #5 fuse controls the blower. Check it out.

A fuse can look fine even after it fails. Replace the fuse regardless of how it looks.

As to the question... I see absolutely no relationship between blower operation and expansion valve activity or lack there of.

raj,

I also believe there is a separate strip fuse aside from the fuse in the fuse box. It's a 30A. If the design is anything like the 1991 420SEL that I worked on that had the same problem, it might be that fuse. It was located in a little 1"x2" plastic box just infront of the main fuse box. When you open this little box, there are two hold down screws for the fuse. I would double check this fuse and the fuse in the main fuse box before looking at anything in the dash.

Thx. I replaced the fuse in the main fuse box and the problem still exists. I will next check on Nolan's suggestion of the additional strip fuse. Cheers, Raj
