Can anyone tell me if the pully on the fan of a 300E has a right or a left handed thread?

Also is there a way to hold the pully... say with a large pair of water pump pliers to keep it from turning as the allen head nut is loosened?

Smiles.

I think it is left hand.

There is a special tool that Mercedes make to hold on the fan, Performance products sell it for about ten dollars. You may also take a small ellen key, and cut it to fit the key way slot.

Good luck

On my car, there's a slot at the 1-2 o-clock position behind the fan pulley looking from the front of the car. Slide a 3mm allen key or a *really* thick piece of wire between the ridges that form the slot and push on the key towards the front of the car while you turn the fan pulley (not just the fan since there's a clutch) until it engages one of two or three holes on the pulley.

You may have a different pulley that requires a special tool, but my recollection is that the tool is not required for W124 and W126 applications of the M103 engine.

An pneumatic tool might do the trick if you have access to one that will fit.

If you want to get creative, fit the belt around the fan pulley and have someone keep it from turning while you loosen the bolt. Keeping it from turning does not mean putting undue side loads on the fan bearing.

Thanks Sixto,

Wish someone had told me about that key and how it operates a day or so ago. I am sitting here with bloody knucles after just completing changing the belt without removing the fan. The most difficult part was getting the belt between the fan hub and the crankshaft pully. Also I thought the 13 mm bolt was on the face of the engine near the 19 mm bolt rather than at the front top of the engine. After rereading your original instructions I realized where it was. I spent two days looking right past it!

Oh well... water over the dam.

Now to change my master cylinder and left rear caliper.

Smiles.

I told you, let the forum know if you plan to remove the fan -- it's a whole affair of its own

Can't help you with the brakes. Haven't done either of those jobs on an MB.
