Does anybody have some real info on Amsiol synthetic motor oil. Good as Mobil or better. This is for a 91 500SL 10-40 or 15-50

I'm sure Amsoil would tell you they are better than any other oil!! Never found any reason to spend that much money on OIL! Even $4.00 a qt is too much $$$$ for the little extra protection. REGULAR oil changed every 3000 to 5000 miles will do just as well under almost all circumstances.

After hearing about the great deals at Wal-mart for Mobil 1 synthetic, I decided I would find the location of a Wal-mart. I called 411 and found a wal-mart in a nearby city and went over to it. To my dismay, there was no Mobil 1 synthetic! They had TONS of Mobil 1 regular, but no synthetic. Grr, I was pissed, I drove 20 miles and they didn't have any! So I went to a pep boys and got the Mobil 1 synthetic (8 qts) for $4.49 each. Oh well... life goes on.... I just put the receipt into "accts payable" anyway. ;) (BTW, I get 1/2 the cost of what I buy back.)

I use Amsoil exclusively in all my cars as well as my families cars. So far it hasn't let me down yet. My dad drove my 89 Chevy S10 Blazer without any oil or water. He hit a 2X4 on the highway and it punctured my oil pan and tore a hole in my lower radiator hose. It was running very hot but the engine is still working today. That was four years ago and the engine is smoking a bit but still working.

I do a complete drain once a year but I change the filter once every three months like clockwork.

I would be very interested if anyone has horror stories about Amsoil products. I have had good luck with them. On paper, they are all similar and it comes down to personal preference and I prefer Amsoil.

Also, gotta disagree with the Doc this time - synthetics are far superior - simply changing an inferior product more often will not approach sythetics in long term results.

Al I can say about Amsoil is that I had a client who operates a major boat dealership, and he has about a dozen die-hard Amsoil junkies as clients. They all insist on Amsoil being used for oil changes in their boats, ranging from center console fishers, to Nautiques, to trawlers. One guy wanted to actually see the oil change being done, and even after, still insusts on having the empty oil bottles returned to him. Of course, he exchanges the oil bottles for a cold case of beer on ice to assure that the service techs always use his Amsoil in his Nautique...
