sliding roof

the sliding roof on my '86 560SEC got stuck today in the open position. I checked the fuse and it is fine. Is there a way to close it manually before I fix it right?? There have been cars stolen from my street, so I want to make sure that is is still there in the morning!

As long as it's not a mechanical problem that keeps you from closing the sunroof you can pull the left side panel out in your trunk and manually crank the sunroof closed. There's a plastic nut at the sunroof motor and just turn it with a socket wrench to close it.

After we turned the nut a little bit, the sunroof motor was able to pull it the rest of the way. but when I opened it up again, it got stuck once more. So we turned the nut a little bit and the motor was able to finish up. Does anyone know what I should check to fix this problem?

The rails, slide points and other moving points need to be cleaned and lubricated. It's a problem to get to all these points, but it's worth the trouble.

Cleaned and lubricated rails is the starting point. If your sunroof still gets stuck and you can still hear the motor running then you may need to tighten up the motor clutch a little bit. I would also check to make sure the sunroof is not cocked to one side when you open and close it. Since I'm not familiar with you sunroof motor I can't help with the procedure to adjust the motor clutch.
