560 engine mounts
1 Attachment(s)
Need to replace the engine mounts in my 560SL. Apparently the one on the right is broken. I'm going to replace both of them and probably the rear engine/transmission mount too. Is there anything else in the photo below that I ought to just do at the same time? See photo below. I plan to replace the three mounts with arrows and am wondering if ought to rebuild the engine shocks as well? Have any of you found that the engine shocks need to be replaced or is rebuilding all that is needed? Are there any other misc. parts I should buy at the same time? I can't recall needing anything extra when I did my 240D, but I'd hate to be in the middle of the job and find that I need something else?

How do you 'rebuild' those little shocks? I thought they were sealed under pressure.
When you get your new mounts, would you mind letting us all in on the difference between the left and right mount, if they are aftermarket, the left is about 3 times the price of the right. Lastly, my 560SL has a transmission mount like the one pictured, but the bracket and bolt (parts 131, 137) are not there. I believe the bolt goes through the hole in the center of the mount. Was this a change introduced after 1986? Sorry I can't advise, as I haven't done the job yet, but maybe someone who reads this will fill us both in. |
The engine shocks can not be rebuild, one needs to purchase new.
Also, be SURE you get Genuine mounts, they are the only ones that last as one would hope/expect. When you do the shocks you will need the shock mount kits as well. Best of luck, it's a bit of a PITA on the 560SL. Jonathan |
I did mine when I changed the subframe mounts, it was easy while I was there.
The little hex bolts that hold the mount to the subframe are nasty, one in particular. I wound up cutting off the end of a hex wrench and sticking that 1" piece in a 1/4" English socket to get it out. Clean the insides of the hex bolts thoroughly before removing them and make sure that the wrench part is in all the way. You do NOT want to strip one. |
My mistake on the engine shocks. It's not a rebuild kit for the shocks, but a mounting kit, item #95. That being said, how many of you have had to replace the engine shocks?
Thanks for the suggestions. |
