Inner and Outer Boot Replacement
I am looking to replace the inner and outer boots on the
constant velocity joints (both right and left sides of the from axles) on a 1992 300E 4-matic sedan. Concerns: 1. Are there any special tools (ie Mercdes tools) required toremove and replace the axles in order to replace the boots? 2. Are there any special torque requirments to complete the replacement? Thanks.

I have done this and it wasn't easy. It was 3 years ago...I don't remember the specifics, you will need new outer locknuts.

Ralph,
Hopefully you have the manuals for the M103 engine that discuss removal of the front axles on the 4matic. There are needle bearings in the tripodjoints that you want to ensure aren't lost. Also, the clamps on the boots are tricky to install on the inner joints. The kit has one of each clamp necessary and if you screw it up, I've never been able to find a source for one of the clamps by themselves. Also, the inner joints have a plastic sleeve that goes inside the boot, over the joint. If this is installed correctly, it provides tension for the middle clamp. If not, the middle clamp slides around and you may notice some grease leakage. |
