engine longevity

So since I am a mercedes diesel owner, I know very little about the gassers, but am considering making the change. From about 96 and up, which are the better engines in regards to lasting longest and best gas mileage?

May I ask, why would u want to go away from diesel? Aren't they suppose to save you money at the gas pump?

Well for quite some time now, diesel is costing about 40-50 cents more a gallon than gasoline. It is beginning to not be worth it.

The w210 with the 3.2 V6 and the 5-speed (after 1998) is the best combo of mpg, longevity, and bang-for-buck in the mid-size cars. You can go smaller to the C-class, but I think the mpg gains will be minimal.

The M111 are pretty bulletproof. I get 31 on the hwy. Non turbo. Not much accelleration though.

the m111, is that the 1.8 4 cylinder?

It's a 4 cyl. In the C series. It has been 2.2L and 2.3L and maybe others.
