I could have posted this in "Tech Help" but I decided to continue the 300CE thread.

I have determined that I need to replace to OVP. Is the location for the 1991 behind the battery inside the plastic cover?

Thanks.

Thanks, Scott!

I also poured over the 124 CD-Rom last night and can add the following pertaining to brake pads, front discs (rotors) and rear discs. I did not explore the differences in the calipers and my focus was contained to the 300CE/E320 coupe, 400E/E420 (W124) and the 500E/E500.

Let's start with a little clarification with the model numbers:

1988-1989 300CE - 124.050
1990-1992 300CE - 124.051
1993-1995 300CE/E320 coupe - 124.052

1992-1995 400E/E420 - 124.034
1992-1995 500E/E500 - 124.036

Now's where the fun starts.

It seems that the 300CE and 500E never shared any brake discs, but did share brake pads (front and rear), at least in U.S. models.

MB has so many combinations of rotors for the varying models and made several changes during the production cycle. The 400E and 500E models also received different parts (depending upon the year) for the U.S. and Japan markets. The manual does not specifically point out the Canadian specs, so I will not comment on that.

FRONT DISCS

124.050 - 22mm thick, 284mm diameter

124.051 - 22mm thick, 295mm diameter

124.052 - 22mm thick, 295mm diameter (used up to 10/1992)
changed to 25mm thick, 294mm diameter (as of 11/1992)

124.034 - 22mm thick, 295mm diameter (for Japan/US markets)
changed to 25mm thick, 294 diameter for Japan/USA (as of MY 1993)
changed again - for other than Japan/USA as of 03/1993 to 30mm thick, 320 diameter, same as 500E)

124.036 - 28mm thick, 300mm diameter (up to 01/1993)
changed to 30mm thick, 320 diameter (as of 02/1993)

REAR DISCS

124.050 - 9mm thick, 258mm diameter

124.051 - 9mm thick, 278 mm diameter

124.052 - 9mm thick, 278mm diameter

124.034 - 24mm thick, 278mm diameter

124.036 - 24mm thick, 278mm diameter (fitted up to 01/1993 including Japan/USA)
changed to 22mm thick, 300mm diameter (fitted as of 02/1993, except Japan/USA)

BRAKE PADS/FRONT

124.050 - 19.3mm thick, with 6.2mm backplate

124.051 - 17.5mm thick, with 5.3mm backplate

124.052 - 17.5mm thick, with 5.3mm backplate
changed (as of 11/1992) to 16mm thick, with 5.3mm backplate

124.034 - 17.5mm thick, with 5.3mm backplate (for MY 1992)
changed (as of MY 1993) to 16mm thick, with 5.3mm backplate. However, for markets other than Japan/USA, they used the 16mm thick pads first (up to 02/1993), then changed (as of 03/1993) to the 17.5mm pads.

124.036 - 17.5mm thick, with 5.3mm backplate

BRAKE PADS/REAR

124.050 - 15.5mm thick, with 4.5mm backplate

124.051 - 15.5mm thick, with 4.5mm backplate

124.052 - 15.5mm thick, with 4.5mm backplate

124.034 - 15.5mm thick, with 4.5mm backplate

124.036 - 15.5mm thick, with 4.5mm backplate (for Japan/USA)
changed to 16mm thick, with 4.5mm backplate (as of 02/1993, for all markets except Japan/USA).

I REALLY have a lot of respect to MB techs and DIYers who can wade through all these changes and specs to get the right part for the right car. I won't even get into part numbers......

overvoltage relay

The overvoltage relay is behind the cover behind the battery. It is approx 4 inches tall and 1 inch square. It will have a clear plastic hinged cover on top of it with a fuse. Incidentally, this fuse often blows when jump starting. Then, the car will be difficult to start when cold and the ABS lamp will be on

el presidente - good job with the brake info. That just about explains the history of 124 brakes!! Now imagine having to stock all of those brake parts for customers...$$$$

I'm curious to get feedback from 300CE/E320 coupe owners about fuel mileage.

Currently, my coupe is getting anywhere between 20.8 to 21.6 mpg in city driving. On the highway, it get close to 27. I use Texaco 93 octane (if that's relevant).

Do you keep track of your mileage? What are you getting?

I am a little lower in both than you , I am running about 19-21 in the City and 24-26 on the freeway. I thought mine was running really well too, but yours is really running!

Oh, I am driving a 95' E320 (w124) coupe.

I havent calculated mine, but I generally average about 200 miles per tank city. I do a lot of driving, and I like to use a heavy foot half of the time for fun.

Highway, probably 300 + miles per tank. I havent taken any long trips with the car yet.

How would I calculate my miles per gallon? Divide tank capacity by miles per tank?

An easy way to get a estimate is to fill up every time completly and divide the miles traveled by gallons you just pumped. City driving I get around 300 miles and freeway only I get around 400 plus! I really like the long legs of this car. Pretty good for a car that weighs over 3800 lbs!

On another note, has anyone changed the pollen filter on this car?

I get about 19-20 in town, and about 24-25 on the freeway. I would get more on the freeway if I drove slower than 78-81, which is my average in 75 MPH speed-limit Arizona.

New website for 300CE and E320 Coupes

I hope that everybody will stay with Mercedesshop.com, and all the great members associated with this place. In addition to this site, a new website has recently been set up specifically for W124 coupe owners. It is at www.mbcoupes.com You can sign up there, and we can form an ongoing community of W124 coupe owners that will supplement what we have all found here. I hope that everyone will take a look at the new site, sign up, and visit from time to time there also. Thank you.

Let's face it, as W124 coupe owners we enjoy the beauty and quality of these 2-door masterpieces.

Nonetheless, I have a passion for other MB autos as well. Don't you? List the three MB's you would most like to own and drive (no garage queens here!)

Do you have a "dream" Mercedes? A "real" 500CE!

1. 2002 CL55AMG Silver w Black
2. 1991 560SEC Black w Palomino
3. 1971 280SE 3.5 coupe Silver w Blue

Alon,

It's funny that you listed a CLK55 as one of your choices! Add that one to my list as well. You can find them now for as little as $60K with less than 10K miles! I'll take one in Silver w Charcoal leather, and special order Exclusive leather interior (stitched dash and console areas)!

p.s. You didn't list any paint color / interiors on your choices...

It figures that el presidente would want a 560SEC (I know that you REALLY want black pearl/grey) ... My current dream cars (as the list changes daily):

E55 silver/black
500E white or silver/greyor black
S600 (140)
CL55
