1991 AMG 300CE 24 3.4

Just heard about a rare 1991 300CE AMG located in Australia. Left hand driver. no good for australia.
low miles,...er. km's

See it at:
http://www.mbspares.com.au/default.asp?d=216&p=150

Old ad, but an interesting story...

I wonder if this would be hard to convert to US EPA non-CA standards?

I actually own a 1989 230CE...
Cream leather interior, 79,000 miles, Full history, Mint condition bodywork in Impala, with 17inch Amg's...
Wanna lower the car, but am reluctant to as i'm worried it might rub...

Is anyone actually famiar with this car. As far as i know the only difference between the two models (300 CE and 230 CE) is engine size...The 300 being a 6 cylinder...

Here in the UK, the 4 cylinder model was/is preferred as it retains its looks but is cheaper to run....Due to spiraling petrol costs...

Question 1989 300CE - 155,000 kilometers

The war department (wife) wants one and I am close to making a deal on one. I need your help to ensure that I am not buying a lemon. Does anyone have some sort of a pre-purchase CHECKLIST (major quirks and flaws) specific to the model?

Your help is appreciated, THANKS.

The only thing that I can think of that is specific to a W124 coupe is the articulating seat belt extenders. For that matter, the W124 cabriolet's have them, as well as W126 SEC's.

Other than that, the checklist would be the same as any other W124.

BTW, what year 300CE are you considering?

The early 300CE's have the M103 engine (if I remember correctly).

I think 1990-1992 300CE's got the early 3.0 liter version of the M104 engine. It still used the old CIS-E fuel injection, with a distributor and spark plug wires. It did not have variable valve timing, either.

In 1993, the 300CE got the 3.2 liter M104 engine, but the badge wasn't changed.

In 1994, the same 3.2 liter engine continued, and the badge changed to E320.

E320 coupe

My father has a '93 E320 coupe. Lovely car, but... Somewhere between our '90 models and '93 the quality went wrong.

We love the coupe for its great looks and strong performance (especially with the 5-speed auto that Oz versions got). Reliability has not been good considering it has only done 130,000km. I found it for my father two and a half years ago in good condition with dealer service history. Since then it has needed an engine wiring harness, a coolant reservoir and had numerous other minor issues, including something breaking in the seat belt extender all in just 18,000km that he has owned it.

The water pump is now leaking and the oil leak at the rear of the motor suggests that we are in for the notorious head gasket failure. My father is fast losing confidence in the car and my parents will only now use their W210 E230 (M111) for long journeys.

As the person who maintains all the Benzes in the family, I am unimpressed with this aspect of the E320 coupe. My father recently suggested I might like to buy it from him but I would rather keep my 190E (with 220,000km) as my daily driver. Unless performance is of greatest importance, I would recommend the M103 as the best engine for a W124 due to its better reliability, quietness and easier maintenance. In a coupe, this restricts you to an '89 or earlier which unfortunately misses out on the updates that occured in late '89. Our '90 300TE (W124 wagon) with 179,000km has been great with a head gasket failure being the only major issue in over five years that we have owned it.

A club member who works as an MB tech recently suggested to me that the M103 was one of MB's finest engines. He also said it was a pity they ruined it when they fitted the 24 valve head and made it an M104.

As a matter of interest, in Australia the six cylinder W124 coupes were badged 300CE, 300CE-24, 320CE and E320. We also got the E220 four at the end of the model run.

300CE concerns

84W123DT....

Following up on your concerns about the 89 CE...

I agree with a previous post about the seat belt extension arm being the major differrence with potential problems between the sedan and coupe. These mechanisms can wear out or just be accidentally broken.
When I bought my 88 CE 2 years ago, the passenger mechanism was not working. MB dealer quote on parts to replace were (US$)256.80 for the belt, 450.80 for the motor mechanism, 53.65 for the rod plus labor 212.50.(approx 2 1/2 hrs). If yours don't work and you want them to function, that's about what a dealer will be charging to fix each .

Apart from that, with 155,000 km on the odo, some of the "normal" 103 engine problems should have been corrected thru regular service or wear and tear replacement....head gasket, valve seals and guides, etc.

FWIW, I would do a carfax search and find out how many title changes there have been...the more owners there have been, the more likely someone skimped on maintenance.
I would also consider having the car inspected and road tested by an auth. MB dealer..at your expense of course.. money well spent in my opinion & you may discover problems unknown even to the seller. Caveat Emptor Mate !

Good Luck,
Jim

I'd like to add my name. Have had my '89 CE for just over a year now. Purchased it from the original owner a year ago in December with 74K on the odo for $10,300. I realize that it was probably a little high, but he had all of the service records and that was worth a few bills to me.

The coupe now has about 95K miles and runs fine. Mechanically, other than normal maintainance, I've had to replace the valve guide seals and the EHA block. The drive shaft flex disk is next up as well as an oil leak at the front of the head/block. Neither is critical and can wait.

Other mods have been to tie down the driver seat springs to the seat frame (giving me an extra inch of headroom, I'm 6'3" tall), install Bilstein HD shocks and Sportline sway bars. Also installed a Becker obtained off eBay in place of the aftermarket Kenwood PO had in the car.

I have purchased, but not yet to installed, Bosch euros and Bosch corners with the amber strip at the rear and some 8-hole 7x15 rims to replace the 15-hole 6.5x15 rims.

Only other mod I would like to do is to install a higher capacity alternator and an Alpine mp3 changer. Other than that, I'll be set for quite awhile.

Color is Smoke Silver with cream interior. All in all, I love the car, but wish it had a stick shift (maybe from an old 190E 2.6) and more head room.

300CE or E320 coupe?

I know this is a roll call thread and I can't add my name yet, but with your help, I hope to very soon...I'm in the initial stages of searching for my next car and I figured that this would be THE thread to post in, as I've really enjoyed reading the input here. I currently own a 1990 300E that has been, with very minor exception, trouble free (knock on wood) and incredible. After having owned several Volvos and a few BMWs (among others), I can honestly say that it's the absolute BEST car that I've ever owned. I'm planning to keep it because I know what I've got, where it came from and on top of all that, I really enjoy it. I've been thinking about everything from '94-95 E420, to a 500E/E500 and also the 300CE/E320 coupe. At this point, I'll most likely go with a coupe, because I agree that the W124 coupe is an absolutely gorgeous design and it's is a car I've admired for a long time. Okay...to the question - and I know it's a very subjective one, but I'm simply looking for opinions. Should I buy a 300CE or a E320 coupe (and why)? I really like the "classic" look of the '93 and earlier, but I also like the '94-'95 "updated" look as well. I understand the + 's and - 's associated with both series and I'm willing to wait and pay the price (w/in reason, of course) for the right car with the right service history. I'm aware of power, wiring harness and head gasket issues, etc., so all I'm really looking for here is for your opinion on what you think about the differences in styling between the two cars (not much, I know - headlights, grille, deck lid, etc.). Hmmm...another thing I would like to know, from anyone who has driven both, is the "seat of the pants feel" between the two engines, as more power is always more fun. I know both cars have their individual merits, but I'm looking for YOUR opinions, to hopefully firm up my own. Thanks guys.

300 v 320

I have had both engines. The 320 certainly seems to have a slight edge on acceleration. I prefer the 103 engine. Many of my friends who are mechanics also for some reason prefer the 3.0 103 models. I am sure the technical guys out there will give there 2 cent's worth. Either way a classic car. I have loved mine. I have fitted the euro headlights and updated the grill so its gives my car a "newer" look.
