Question 1986 300E boggs down at times.

My 1986 300e always starts GREAT in sub zero temperatures with idle increasing until it warms up. However at times when restarting when warm it back fires and has very rough idle for a minute or so then all is well again. It was scary the other day when I picked up a coffee at a drive through and then when I tried to turn into the road and merge with traffic the engine bogged down and could hardly move the car. The problem disappeared in minute or so and all was well again. What could be the cause of this problem? ------- To try to solve this problem I have just a few days ago, changed the fuel filter, Distributor Cap and Rotor, Hi tension Wires, air filter and plugs, but the problem persists.

Start looking for vacuum leaks. For instance, my M103 has a small leak on the underside of the intake manifold. It is something I can live with, but it isn't much fun.

I replaced all of the small vacuum lines on my car as part of a broad campaign to replace all of the rubber parts. I used the small line available from Autozone, or just about anywhere, and that made a difference.

Question Vacuum leaks - perhaps.

I have checked all the vacuum lines and all seem fine - except a vacuum line that comes from a small barrel shaped unit next to the fuel distributor, which has a gas line in and then a gas line line out to the fuel distributor. I thought it had a steel nipple to connect the vac line which goes to the valve cover and then air cleaner but I was wrong, it has a rubber tube that goes into the unit which I yanked out and now can't properly re-insert. Do you have any idea what this little unit does?
