hydraulic lifters or not on a 2.3-16???
OK, I'll display my ignorance here on this one. Does a 2.3-16 have hydraulic lifters or not? I've heard both answers from others in the forum. Here's the kicker, my tech tells me they ARE.
So, if someone out there who credibly knows the correct answer, confidently, please advise by either confirming this or proving to the contrary. If they're NOT, I'll know not to return to that f'n shop! Thanks to anyone who can provide me a legitimate answer!!! Reason for concern is that I get a cold start 'clatter' that immediately goes away, just like a car w/ hydro lifters. But then someone suggested it was the chain tensioner. I'd like to know where to start. |
Yes the car has valve adjustment!! there are 20 sizes of shims, from 2.5mm to 3.4mm. & the cams have to be removed to do valve adjustment.

ARGH!!!
That's what I thought that's what I thought that's what I thought!!!! F'n stupid arse shop here in CT. Guess it's time to find a new shop. Whatta bunch of tools.

I have a 190E 8V, and there is NO clatter on starting. Sounds more likely to me that oil pressure is low from worn bearings, or a problem unrelated to oil at all. Steve |
Steve, I'd hope that an oil pressure issue / worn bearing (!!!) issue would have reared it's ugly head after 10 months, especiallly after track use, etc. It's an intermittent issue as well, not a typical sign of bearing wear.
Interesting, though. MB Doc, not that I am doubting your opinion, at ALL, but I am still receiving conflicting info on this issue. Another, separate MB tech I just spoke with says he's actually seen SOME US 2.3-16's with the hydro's. Mine's an '87. Is this possible? Regardless, I've ordered the new gasket and plan to yank the cover in the next week for a 1st hand peek. Mystery will be solved! Again, many thanks to you both and any others that feel they may be able to help! |

I have an '88 Integra which has had a cold engine valve noise for about the last 110k of its 180k miles. It is just one valve (or pair, 16V), and I suspect a sticky one, eg from a bent shaft or other. It clears up in a couple minutes of driving. It still rev's freely without distress and with power to 6500 rpm, when warm. My point is that engine damage that causes a noise, whether scored bearings, warped valve shaft, etc, won't NECESSARILY result in rapid failure of the part. Steve |
