more M104 head gasket leakage...

on a 90 300CE DOHC, 160K mi. took it to an indy shop and local Benz dealer. Both say it's just external head gasket leak w/ no oil into cooling system. Both quoted $1300+. Think I might just tackle this damn thing myself. Figured if I can pull/drop rotary engines, a dinky Benz head gasket shouldn't be that hard.

So the question is: Valve job, everyone seems to say yes (in the archives at least). How much should I pay? I don't want 3-angle or anything, just a 'refreshment'.

Water pump, it's right there, should I do it? Timing chain, also right there, do it as well? TIA!

hey Tony you are in California, and not that far form LA.

Why don't you give my local independent a call and ask him his prices.

he is Mr. MB Motors in Tarzana, ask for enrique.

I don't have the number off hand.

He quoted my brother $500 to do the timing chain on his 1985 380SL which has the dual chains. not too bad of a price for that if you ask me.

I'm sure he will be more than reasonable on the price for you.

BTW he worked for beverly hills MB dealer for 25 years If I remember correctly, and then for auto stiegler in van nuys, and has one of the cleanest shops I have ever seen.

I wish somebody would pay me $500 to change the timing chain of a 117 engine. It takes about 2 hrs.
